L-Glutathione Overview

L-Glutathione is a tripeptide found in virtually all living organisms, where it acts as a primary intracellular antioxidant and redox regulator. In its reduced form (GSH), it helps neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), maintain redox homeostasis and protect proteins, lipids and DNA against oxidative stress.

The sulfhydryl group on its cysteine residue lets glutathione serve as a substrate for peroxidase enzymes that reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides. Research models examine its role in phase II conjugation pathways, cell signaling, mitochondrial function and protein folding.
